New club activity - Adventure Race Training

What is Adventure Racing?

It’s a mix of trail running, mountain biking and kayaking or ropework, usually in the countryside or scenic areas. There’s no set course, you often choose your own routes to checkpoints, and you can expend as much or as little energy as you like. It appeals to everyone from beginners to veterans.

Why have Adventure Race training in AOAC?

AOAC already engages in the activities which form the basis of Adventure Racing and we will be taking advantage of this. However Adventure Racers may view the activity slightly differently e.g. those currently doing their One Star kayaking are learning the proper way to kayak – which will be invaluable on an hour’s swift paddle along a canal or estuary. But those interested in adventure racing may also want to practise fitting three people onto a two-person kayak and racing it blindfolded!
Adventure Racing is growing rapidly, but few clubs cater for it.

It’s becoming a very popular sport in its own right and as it’s an outdoor activity, so why not? To enjoy Adventure Racing you need a good level of stamina: training frequently will help get us there. Training as a group has a lot of benefits – we can motivate each other, and work that bit harder because there will always be someone better than you, we can learn about each others strengths and weaknesses, and pass on experience. Even if you’re not sure about Adventure Racing, if you just want to increase your fitness, or are taking part in events such as half-marathons, marathons or triathlons, then AR training sessions will be of benefit.

There are lots of different Adventure Races, some pure fun, others more serious; some over a few hours, some over whole weekends or even weeks; some include solo competitors, most are for mixed two, three or four-person teams. Adventure Race training will be a great way to meet people and find those all-important team-mates who match your level and interest - and hopefully share a sense of humour.

So what are Wednesday evenings going to involve?

All sorts! Running, cycling (on- and off-road), circuit training, orienteering, team building, kayaking, rope work ...  along with training tips, racing tips, team work tips etc! Missing some skills? We’ll organise an expert to teach you. Map reading, orienteering, abseiling, safety ropes – they’re all be useful on those AOAC weekends! Training sessions will be at least two hours and planned in advance so people can come with the right equipment and a bit of an idea of what to expect.
