Home » News » Punting in Oxford - Directions
This is a trip I have organised for many years and is a fantastic day out; last year, about 30 went and had a great time. We go upstream for about 20 minutes to a riverside pub, the Victoria Arms in Old Marston, which does good pub lunches; then upstream for half an hour more to an idyllic stretch of river bank to lie about for as long as we want, play Frisbee etc. It’s a great day for long dresses and strawberries or T-shirts & jeans - whatever, it’s very relaxing. A punt will take 6 and costs £70 for the whole day, which is VERY cheap as you can take it out till 8 p.m. if you want. The Cherwell is a beautiful, quiet river with lots of wildlife and NO motorboats (and not too deep to punt, either). The Cherwell Boathouse does ice creams and teas and even has a good restaurant. The potential downers: if the weather is really awful (i.e. continuous rain), it’s no good. But I’ve had trips before when it’s raining in Bristol but you can enjoy punting in Oxford. We have good fun if there are occasional showers; we just moor the boats under a bridge and drink there instead…. You do NOT have to let me know or book beforehand and you can bring as many people as you like. It takes 90 minutes to get to Oxford. For directions, please follow the link. IT IS NOT EASY TO FIND THE CHERWELL BOATHOUSE (N.B. it is NOT on the Thames) so it would be wise to leave Bristol by 0930 at the latest and allow 30 minutes to find it. A map to find the Boathouse is on the AOAC website. Parking in the area is now more difficult and I will have to be outside the entrance to give people maps for parking. So please don’t get there too late - at 1200 I am going punting whatever. My home number is 01179731435 and my mobile is 07966 543711 but coverage is unreliable and it might not work there!
